Theruddy-breasted seedeater (Sporophila minuta) is aspecies of bird in the tanager familyThraupidae.It is found inBrazil,Colombia,Costa Rica,Ecuador,El Salvador,French Guiana,Guatemala,Guyana,Honduras,Mexico,Nicaragua,Panama,Suriname,Trinidad and Tobago, andVenezuela.Its naturalhabitats are drysavanna, subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowlandgrassland, and heavily degraded formerforest.
The ruddy-breasted seedeater wasformally described by the Swedish naturalistCarl Linnaeus in 1758 in thetenth edition of hisSystema Naturae under thebinomial nameLoxia minuta.[2] The specific epithet is fromLatinminutus meaning "little" or "small".[3] Thetype locality isSuriname.[4] The ruddy-breasted seedeater is now placed in thegenusSporophila that was introduced by the German ornithologistJean Cabanis in 1844.[5][6]
