Ruben van Bommel (born 3 August 2004) is a Dutch professionalfootballer who plays as awinger forEredivisie clubAZ.
Van Bommel progressed through thePSV academy, before moving toMVV in 2020.[2]
He made his debut in theEerste Divisie on 8 August 2022 away atJong AZ appearing as a second-half substitute forKoen Kostons. His brotherThomas van Bommel started the game and they were playing alongside each other for 20 minutes until Thomas was subbed off late in the second half.[3] On his first appearance at Maastricht's home groundDe Geusselt, a week after his professional debut, van Bommel scored his first professional goal in a 3–1 win againstNAC Breda.[4][5] Van Bommel received some notoriety in September 2022 when he was one of two players, along withJaymillio Pinas in a match between MVV andDordrecht who were booked fordiving inside a minute of each other.[6][7] On 10 February 2023, he scored abrace and provided an assist in a 5–1 league win overTOP Oss.[8] His second goal was a beautiful chip over opposing goalkeeperThijs Jansen.[9] After the game he stated that he intended to extend his contract with MVV.[9]
On 1 July 2023, Van Bommel officially signed a four-year contract withEredivisie clubAZ, agreeing to a commitment to the club until 2027.[10][11]
Van Bommel was called up for theNetherlands under-20 team on 17 March 2023 by national team managerMartijn Reuser.[12] On 25 March 2023, he made his international debut for the under-20s in a 2–1 friendly win againstFrance U20.[13][14]
Aleft winger, Van Bommel is known for his acceleration, skillset, and for his runs into the box. He has been compared toÁngel Di María byHans Kraay Jr.[15]
Van Bommel's father isMark van Bommel, and his brother isThomas van Bommel, while his maternal grandfather isBert van Marwijk. His father played for theNetherlands in the2010 FIFA World Cup final, in which van Marwijk was the manager.[16]
