TheRiver Creedy is a small river inDevon,England. It gives its name to the local town orton ofCrediton, which is on its west bank, and to several local historic estates, such asCreedy Hilion,Creedy Peitevin (later calledCreedy Wiger)[1] andCreedy Park, in the parish ofSandford, also to theBenefice of North Creedy. Just below the town, the river merges with theRiver Yeo and it ends where it meets theRiver Exe atCowley Bridge. The river is overlooked byFordy Wood Copse, a 0.64 hectares (1.58 acres) woodland owned and managed by theWoodland Trust.[2]
The name is believed to be ofCeltic origin, but views on its precise origin differ. According to one source, it derives from a root meaningwinding.[3] Another view holds that it meansshrinking, as compared with the more powerful Yeo.[4]
