Richard Miles (born 1969)[1] is a Britishhistorian andarchaeologist, best known for presenting two major historical documentary series:BBC2'sAncient Worlds (2010),[2] which presented a comprehensive overview of classical history and the dawn ofcivilisation, andBBC Four'sArchaeology: A Secret History (2013).[3]
Miles was born inPembury,Kent. He studiedancient history and archaeology at theUniversity of Liverpool and undertook a PhD inclassics under ProfessorPeter Garnsey atTrinity Hall, Cambridge. He isProfessor of Roman History and Archaeology andpro-vice-chancellor of enterprise and engagement at theUniversity of Sydney.[4] He was formerly head of the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry, and is a former director of the Arts Career Ready Programme at Sydney.[5] His research primarily concernsPunic andLate Roman history and archaeology.
He has directed archaeological digs inCarthage andRome, and in 2010 he publishedCarthage Must Be Destroyed: The Rise and Fall of an Ancient Mediterranean Civilisation.[5] He also hosted the two-partChannel 4 seriesCarthage: The Roman Holocaust (2004), which focuses upon thewar between Carthage and Rome.[6]
