TheRižana subdialect (rižanski govor,[1]rižansko podnarečje[2]) is aSlovene subdialect of theIstrian dialect in theLittoral dialect group. It is spoken in Italy in most of the municipalities ofSan Dorligo della Valle andMuggia (Milje) south ofTrieste, as well as in some southern suburbs of Trieste (especiallyServola); in Slovenia, it is spoken in the northern part ofSlovene Istria, in theRižana Valley east and north ofKoper, including the settlements ofBertoki,Dekani,Osp,Črni Kal,Presnica,Podgorje, andZazid.[2][3]
Like theŠavrin Hills subdialect, the Rižana subdialect is based on characteristics of theLower Carniolan andLittoral dialect groups. Accented vowels do not have length contrast. Secondary palatalization of the velarsk g h has arisen before front vowels.[4] Verbalconjugation lacks thedual. The two subdialects share many lexical features, with manyloanwords fromRomance languages.
