TheRižana is a river inSlovenia. It has also been known as theRisano. It was known as theFormio in Latin.
The village ofRižana is located upon it. Its mouth is on or near theGulf of Trieste of theAdriatic Sea. TheŠkocjan Lagoon Nature Reserve is a park area of wetlands where the Rižana andBadaševica rivers used to flow into the sea.[1]
The Rižana was attested in historical sources asRusanoc. 670,Rizianoc. 804,Risano in 1135, andGarzignana in 1569, among other spellings. The origin of the name is pre-Slavic and is probably related to theIllyrian toponym ῬιζάναRhizana, reflected in the Montenegrin toponymRisan. The name is probably derived from theProto-Indo-European root*erei̯H- 'to flow'.[2]
