In thehuman brain, theentorhinal cortex appears as a longitudinal elevation anterior to theparahippocampal gyrus, with a corresponding internal furrow, the externalrhinal sulcus (orrhinal fissure). The rhinal sulcus separates theparahippocampaluncus from the rest of thetemporal lobe in theneocortex.[1] The rhinal sulcus and thehippocampal sulcus were both present in early mammals.[1]
It is analogous to thecollateral fissure found further caudally in the inferior part of the temporal lobe.
