Rhenish Franconian orRhine Franconian (German:Rheinfränkisch[ˈʁaɪnfʁɛnkɪʃ]) is adialect chain ofWest Central German. It comprises the varieties of German spoken across the western regions of the states ofSaarland,Rhineland-Palatinate, northwest Baden-Württemberg, andHesse in Germany. It is also spoken in northeast France, in the eastern part of thedépartement ofMoselle in theLorraine region, and in the north-west part ofBas-Rhin inAlsace. To the north, it is bounded by theSankt Goar line (ordas–dat line) which separates it fromMoselle Franconian; to the south, it is bounded by theMain line which is also referred to as theSpeyer line which separates it from theUpper German dialects.
