Red Sea Governorate (Arabic:محافظة البحر الأحمرMuḥafaẓah al Baḥr al Aḥmar) is one of the 27governorates (States) ofEgypt. Located between theNile and theRed Sea in the southeast of the country, its southern border forms part ofEgypt's border with Sudan. Itscapital and largest city isHurghada.

Municipal divisions

The governorate is divided intomunicipal divisions with a total estimated population as of January 2024 of410,229. In the case of Red Sea governorate, some are fully urban, some are fully rural, and some are a combination of rural and urban.[6][7]

Geography

Administratively, the Red Sea Governorate is bordered in the north by theSuez Governorate, to the east by the Red Sea, and to the west by the governorates ofAswan,Qena,Sohag,Asyut,al-Minya andBeni Suef. In the south it is bordered by Sudan'sRed Sea State. It contains the disputed territory of theHalaib Triangle, including theSiyal Islands, and contains theRed Sea Hills, a mountain chain making up theItbay region of Eastern Egypt and Sudan.

The Red Sea Governate has seen large percentage increases in population in recent decades.

Economy

The coast is a tourist destination. Since the early 1980s, Hurghada has been a popular destination for beach lovers and scuba divers. Tourism is also growing in the southern cities ofAl-Qusair,Safaga andMarsa Alam. In addition to the numerous hotels and tourist establishments in the centers are located in Al-Bahr al-Ahmar 2 official nature reserves are to be developed for tourism or. TheWadi al-Gamal National Park (Valley of the camels) atHamata near the town ofMarsa Alam and theGebel Elba National Park in disputedHalaib Triangle north of the town of Halaib. Besides a strong tourism industry, there is also a large offshore fishing industry. The area, which extends over the province, is rich in minerals, such as in phosphates. TheRas Gharib region contains 70% of Egypt's oil production.
