Red Hour Productions is an American filmproduction company operated by actorBen Stiller and formerly with producerStuart Cornfeld. In the past, Red Hour has hadfirst-look deals withNew Line Cinema and20th Century Fox.[1][citation needed]
The name was derived from a 1967Star Trek episode, "The Return of the Archons", which features a scheduled alien riot.[2] The company's logo contains a jester.
The first film produced by Red Hour was the 2001 comedy filmZoolander, based on the male model character Stiller co-created withDrake Sather for theVH1 Fashion Awards.[3] Stiller co-wrote the screenplay withJohn Hamburg and directed the film. Red Hour Films also producedDodgeBall: A True Underdog Story, starring Stiller andVince Vaughn;Starsky and Hutch, starring Stiller andOwen Wilson;Blades of Glory, starringWill Ferrell andJon Heder; andTropic Thunder, starring Stiller,Jack Black, andRobert Downey Jr.Tropic Thunder earned anAcademy Award nomination for Downey, Jr. andGolden Globe Award nominations for both Downey, Jr. andTom Cruise. The film won "Best Comedy" at the Broadcast Critics Film Awards and the Hollywood Film Awards.[4]
In November 2011, Red Hour announced a new television division to be headed by veteran film and television executiveDebbie Liebling, and signed an overall deal withABC Studios.[5] In its first development season, Red Hour Television sold two comedies toABC,Please Knock andThe Notorious Mollie Flowers.[6]
In 2010, Red Hour Digital, a subsidiary of Red Hour Films, signed a two-year first look digital deal with Paramount Digital Entertainment.[7] Under the new two-year deal, Red Hour planned to develop original digital media properties that can be launched on a variety of formats, including live action and animatedwebisodes, and social media games on both digital and mobile platforms.[8]
