TheR50 is aprovincial route inSouth Africa that connectsPretoria withStanderton viaDelmas andLeandra.[1]
The R50 begins inPretoria,Tshwane (Administrative Capital of South Africa) near the suburbs of Erasmusrand andWaterkloof Ridge, at an intersection with theN1 Danie Joubert Freeway (Pretoria Eastern Bypass). North of the freeway, it is designated as theM9 metropolitan route and named Rigel Avenue. It begins as Delmas Road and heads south-east, passing throughErasmuskloof and meeting theM10 metropolitan route (Solomon Mahlangu Drive) before passing in-betweenWingate Park andElardus Park and becoming the eastern border of theRietvlei Nature Reserve. The R50 heads south-east toBapsfontein,Ekurhuleni. The distance from the N1 intersection in Pretoria to Bapsfontein is 30 km.[1]
Upon enteringBapsfontein, the R50 meets theR25 route fromKempton Park.[2]: 29 They are cosigned as one road up to the four-way junction of Bapsfontein, where they meet the northern terminus of theR51 route fromDaveyton/Springs.[2]: 29 As the R25 becomes the road to the north-east at that junction towardsBronkhorstspruit, the R50 remains as the south-easterly road.[2]: 29
The R50 runs another 30 km to the town ofDelmas, crossing the border betweenGauteng andMpumalanga.[2]: 29 Just before entering Delmas, the R50 meets theN12 freeway betweenJohannesburg andWitbank.[2]: 29 In Delmas, the R50 meets theR42 route from Bronkhorstspruit.[2]: 29 They are one road for the next 5 km south-east, intersecting with theR555 road during this time.[1]
South of Delmas, The R42 becomes its own road, heading south-west towardsNigel, Gauteng, leaving the R50 as the south-easterly road. The road continues east-south-east. After meeting theR580, the R50 turns directly south towards the town of Leandra. The journey from Delmas to Leandra is 45 km.[1]
InLeandra, the R50 intersects with theR29 road in Leandra Central and theN17 highway about 3 kilometres south of the town centre (both roads coming fromSprings andJohannesburg in the west andKinross in the east).[2]: 21 The R50 journeys another 80 km south-east, intersecting with theR547 road near Brendan Village (staggered junction; cosigned for a few kilometres), to the town of Standerton.[2]: 21
InStanderton, the R50 reaches its south-eastern terminus by meeting the passingR546 route fromEvander, the passingR23 route fromHeidelberg and the south-western terminus of theR39 route fromErmelo.[2]: 21
In October 2019 a sinkhole developed on the R50 approximately 6 km before the intersection with the R25 coming from Kempton Park, affecting both sides of the road.[3][4][5] By November 2021, the sinkhole had not yet been resolved by the road agencies.[5][6]
TheDemocratic Alliance reported on 6 March 2025 that the road has been reopened by theGauteng Department of Roads and Transport.[7]
