Thepurple-chested hummingbird (Polyerata rosenbergi) is a species ofhummingbird in the familyTrochilidae.It is found inColombia andEcuador. Its naturalhabitats aresubtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and heavily degraded former forest. It is commonly hunted for the supposed medicinal properties of its beak by indigenous peoples in the area.
This species was formerly placed in the genusAmazilia. Amolecular phylogenetic study published in 2014 found thatAmazilia waspolyphyletic.[3] In the revised classification to createmonophyletic genera, the purple-chested hummingbird was moved to the resurrected genusPolyerata.[4][5]
