Mafalda-Cecilia von Saxe-Coburg und Gotha (Bulgarian:Mafalda-Cecilia Sakskoburggotska; born 27 July 1994), known professionally asOna Mafalda, is a British-born Spanish singer-songwriter. She released her debutEPBailando sin sentido in 2021, followed by her debut album,Ona, in 2023. She has performed at music festivals includingPrimavera Sound,Eurosonic Noorderslag, andThe Great Escape Festival.

As a granddaughter ofSimeon II, the last reigningtsar of Bulgaria, she is a member of the formerBulgarian royal family and a princess of theHouse of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha-Koháry.

Early life and family

Mafalda was born on 27 July 1994 inLondon toMaría del Rosario Nadal y Fuster de Puigdórfila, a Spanish aristocrat and art director, andKyril, Prince of Preslav, a member of theBulgarian royal family.[1] She is a granddaughter ofSimeon II of Bulgaria, who was the lasttsar of theKingdom of Bulgaria and later served as theprime minister of theRepublic of Bulgaria.[2] In 1999 Mafalda served as a bridal attendant in the wedding ofPrincess Alexia of Greece and Denmark andCarlos Morales Quintana.

Mafalda grew up in London and inMallorca.[3] She moved to the United States to attendBerklee College of Music inBoston, where she was a student for three years.[1][4]

Career

Mafalda describes her music as "dark pop" and citesLana Del Rey,Cat Power,Lauryn Hill,The Strokes,Belle & Sebastian, andKaiser Chiefs as musical influences.[4][5] She started writing music when she was fourteen years old.[6][4] She released her first single,Don't Let Go, in 2015 while she was a student at Berklee. She released anextended play titledDaisy Chain in June 2019, which was produced byIan Barter andDoug Schadt.[4]

In 2016, she performed for aValentino fashion show at Island Club on theAthens Riviera in Greece.[7] Mafalda performed atNew York Fashion Week and went on a music tour in Italy in 2019.[4]

Mafalda released her debutextended play,Bailando sin sentido, in April 2021.[8][9] She collaborated with French pianistSofiane Pamart on the songsA otro lado,Mala suerte, andMi parte.[10]

On 8 June 2022, she performed atPrimavera Sound 2022.[9] She also performed at Inverfest and the Festival de La Luz.[11]

Her debut album,Ona, released in 2023.[8] It was produced by ODDLIQUOR.[10] In May 2023, Mafalda performed as an opening act in Barcelona forColdplay on the second European run of theirMusic of the Spheres World Tour.[12]

On 19 January 2024, she performed atEurosonic Noorderslag inGroningen.[9][3] She performed atThe Great Escape Festival inBrighton in May 2024.[9]

Personal life

Mafalda moved toNew York City in 2017 and lives inLower Manhattan.[4]

In 2016 she was featured in a society list ofNew Modern Swans byTown & Country.[13]

On 28 May 2022 she married Marc Abousleiman inPalma, Mallorca.[14] They separated in 2024.[15]
