Junior formulae series

[edit]

Prema Racing started operating in 1983 and joined theItalian Formula 3 Championship the following year. National F3 would be the main proving ground for the team in the early years. Among his first famous alumni stand futureTouring Car starFabrizio Giovanardi, multipleLe Mans winnerRinaldo Capello andFormula 1 World ChampionJacques Villeneuve. More Italian Formula 3 Championship titles came in 1990 with Roberto Colciago, in 1998 withDonny Crevels and in 1999 withPeter Sundberg. The team also made a one-season attempt at theInternational Formula 3000 Championship.[2][3]

In1988, the team made its first international foray at theMacau Grand Prix, a competition that would have seen it at the start for the most part of the following decades.[4]

In 2000, Prema started competing in the modern-eraFormula Renault races, winning theFormula Renault 2000 Eurocup Team Championship and theItalian Formula Renault 2000 championship withRyan Briscoe in 2001. Other notable achievements include winning the 2005 Italian Formula Renault 2000 Championship with future F1 starKamui Kobayashi.[5][6]

In 2003, the team entered theFormula 3 Euro Series and won the inaugural edition withRyan Briscoe. In the following years, the team struggled to achieve competitive results but rebounded by claiming the 2011 and 2012 titles withRoberto Mehri andDaniel Juncadella. The series then transitioned into theFIA Formula 3 European Championship, and Prema started almost complete domination, winning all the team titles from 2011 and 2018 and all the driver championships but one. Some of the Champions also went on to become Formula 1 drivers includingEsteban Ocon,Lance Stroll, andMick Schumacher. In 2011, the team claimed its firstMacau Grand Prix win withJuncadella.[7][8][9][10]

In the same period, the team started expanding towards the bottom and the top of the junior single-seater ladder. Between 2006 and 2009, the team took part in theWorld Series Formula V8 3.5 championship with a best placing of fourth in 2008 withMiguel Molina, and also competed in the short-livedItalian and EuropeanFormula Abarth championships.

With the FIA establishing a more strictly-regulated ladder toward Formula 1, Prema progressively expanded to encompass all its steps. While staying active inEuropean Formula 3, the team embracedFormula 4, winning the first two editions of theItalian Formula 4 Championship withLance Stroll andRalf Aron. It also entered theGP2 Series in 2016, finishing 1–2 at debut withRed Bull Junior driverPierre Gasly andAntonio Giovinazzi. In 2017, as the series evolved into theFIA Formula 2 Championship, Prema dominated again withFerrari Driver Academy'sCharles Leclerc claiming seven wins and seven poles en route to an early title.[11][12][13][14]

For2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship campaign the team fielded experienced driversSean Gelael andNyck de Vries.[15][16] In the2018 FIA Formula 3 European Championship the team were represented byFerrari Driver Academy membersMarcus Armstrong,Robert Shwartzman andGuanyu Zhou.[17][18][19] Their 2016 F3 driverRalf Aron returned to the F3 team, as well asMick Schumacher who went on to win the Formula.[20][21] For their double ADAC and Italian F4 programme they signed Olli Caldwell and Ferrari Academy driversEnzo Fittipaldi and Gianluca Petecof.[22][23][24]Red Bull Junior Jack Doohan is scheduled to race with Prema for selected round in both championships.[25]

In2019 the team is represented in FIA Formula 2 bySean Gelael and their FIA F3 European ChampionMick Schumacher.[26][27] Whilst the team only finished 9th in the team championship in F2, they were the champions in theinaugural F3 Championship with the driversRobert Shwartzman,Jehan Daruvala andMarcus Armstrong. Shwartzman would also end up winning the driver's title, with Armstrong and Daruvala coming second and third respectively.Prema also competed inItalian F4 in 2019, where they came second in both championships, being beaten comprehensively byVan Amersfoort Racing and theNorwegian driverDennis Hauger.

Mick Schumacher was retained andShwartzman was promoted for the followingF2 season.[28] Schumacher would go on to win the drivers title,[29] with Shwartzman finishing in 4th with the most wins.[30]In the2020 F3 season, the driver line up wasLogan Sargeant,[31] Prema's2019 FREC winnerFrederik Vesti,[32] andOscar Piastri.[33] Piastri would win the drivers' championship, with Sargeant and Vesti 3rd and 4th respectively.[34]For the2020 FREC season, Prema's line up consisted of four full time drivers; past PremaF4 driversOliver Rasmussen[35] andGianluca Petecof,[36] as well asArthur Leclerc[37] andJamie Chadwick.[38] The season was completely dominated by the team, with Petecof, Leclerc and Rasmussen finishing in the first three positions of the drivers' championship, and as in2020 F3 season winning the teams' championship by a more than comfortable margin.[39]

IndyCar Series

[edit]

In early 2024, Prema expressed interest about joiningIndyCar as early as 2025.[40] In April of that year, the team confirmed their entry into the2025 season, and are going to be supplied byChevrolet engines.[41] The team is set to have a two driver lineup, composed ofCallum Ilott and former Prema F2 driverRobert Shwartzman.[42][43]
