Portrait of Charles Dickens is an 1839portrait painting by the IrishartistDaniel Maclise depicting the English novelistCharles Dickens.[1][2] Dickens debut novelThe Pickwick Papers had been a popular success, which he had followed up withNicholas Nickleby. He was around twenty seven when he sat for the painting, which is sometimes known asYoung Dickens.
The painting depicts Dickens sitting at a writing table and was generally considered a "good likeness". It was used for thefrontispiece of his third novelNicholas Nickleby.[3] Today it is in the collection of theNational Portrait Gallery inLondon, having been transferred from theTate Galleries in 2012.[4] Anengraving based on the painting was produced byEdward Francis Finden.[5]
