New South Wales (commonly abbreviated asNSW) is astate on theeast coast ofAustralia. It bordersQueensland to the north,Victoria to the south, andSouth Australia to the west. Its coast borders theCoral andTasman Seas to the east. TheAustralian Capital Territory andJervis Bay Territory areenclaves within the state. New South Wales' state capital isSydney, which is also Australia's most populous city. In December 2023[update], the population of New South Wales was over 8.3 million, making it Australia's most populous state. Almost two-thirds of the state's population, 5.3 million, live in the Greater Sydney area.
TheColony of New South Wales was founded as a Britishpenal colony in 1788. It originally comprised more than half of theAustralian mainland with itswestern boundary set at129th meridian east in 1825. The colony then also included the island territories ofVan Diemen's Land,Lord Howe Island, andNorfolk Island. During the 19th century,most of the colony's area was detached to form separateBritish colonies that eventually became the variousstates and territories of Australia. TheHoary-headed Grebe,Poliocephalus poliocephalus, is a member of thegrebe family common to New South Wales, and across Australia. The bird takes its name from the silvery-white streaking on its black head.
