ThePacific blue-eye (Pseudomugil signifer) is a species offish in thesubfamilyPseudomugilinae native to eastern Australia.Described by Austrian naturalistRudolf Kner in 1866, it comprises two subspecies that have been regarded as separate species in the past and may be once again with further study. It is a common fish of rivers andestuaries along the eastern seaboard fromCape York in NorthQueensland to southernNew South Wales, theBurdekin Gap in central-north Queensland dividing the ranges of the two subspecies.

A small silvery fish averaging around 3.25 cm intotal length (1+1⁄8–1+3⁄8 in), the Pacific blue-eye is recognisable by its blue eye-ring and two dorsal fins. It forms looseschools of tens to thousands of individuals. It eats water-borne insects as well as flying insects that land on the water's surface, foraging for them by sight. Sir Albert John Gould,VD (12 February 1847 – 27 July 1936) was an Australian politician and solicitor who served as the secondpresident of theAustralian Senate.

A solicitor, businessman and citizen soldier before his entry into politics, Gould was a member of theNew South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1882 to 1898, during which time he served as Minister for Justice in twoFree Trade governments. He later served two years in theNew South Wales Legislative Council from 1899 to 1901 until his election to theAustralian Senate. Gould's interest in parliamentary procedure saw him become involved with the relevant standing committee and he was elected unopposed as the second President of the Senate in 1907. The1947 Sydney hailstorm was a natural disaster which struckSydney, Australia, on 1 January 1947. Thestorm cell developed on the morning of New Year's Day, a public holiday in Australia, over theBlue Mountains, hitting the city and dissipating east ofBondi in the mid-afternoon. At the time, it was the most severe storm to strike the city since recorded observations began in 1792.

The high humidity, temperatures and weather patterns of Sydney increased the strength of the storm. The cost of damages from the storm were, at the time, approximately£750,000 (US$3 million); this is the equivalent of aroundA$45 million in modern figures. Thesupercell droppedhailstones larger than 8 centimetres (3.1 in) in diameter, with the most significant damage occurring in thecentral business district andeastern suburbs of Sydney. At the2012 Summer Paralympics in London, she became the youngest Australian Paralympic medallist by winning bronze medals in the women's 400 m and 100 m freestyle S8 events. She then became the youngest Australian gold medallist when she was a member of the women's 4 × 100 m freestyle relay 34 points team. Snowy Mountains Highway is a 333-kilometre-long (207 mi)state highway located inNew South Wales, Australia. Its two sections connect the New South WalesSouth Coast to theMonaro region, and the Monaro to theSouth Western Slopes via theSnowy Mountains. The higher altitude regions of this road are subject to snow over the winter months, and the road also provides access to many parts of theSnowy Mountains Scheme. The highway bears the B72 shield along its entire length.

The highway originally bore the nameMonaro Highway until 1955, when it received its current name. It originally ran fromTathra toWagga Wagga but has been shortened to run fromPrinces Highway toHume Highway instead. Reservoirs created as a result of dams built in the 1950s and 1960s as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme required the creation of major realignments to avoid submerged areas. Steven Peter Devereux Smith (born 2 June 1989) is an Australian internationalcricketer, former captain of theAustralian national team in all three formats of the game and the vice-captain of the Australia Test team. He is regarded by many as the best Test batsman of his generation and one of the greatest Test batsmen of all time, having scored over10,000 Test runs.
Smith was a member of the Australian teams that won the2015 and2023Cricket World Cup, the2021 ICC T20 World Cup, and the vice-captain in2023 ICC World Test Championship.

Although he was initially selected for Australia as aleg-spinningall-rounder in 2010, Smith was always earmarked as a batting prospect following successful batting campaigns in domestic cricket early in his career. Smith now plays primarily as a batsman who bowls occasionally. Blair Anderson Wark,VC, DSO (27 July 1894 – 13 June 1941) was an Australian soldier,quantity surveyor, anda recipient of theVictoria Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry "in the face of the enemy" that can be awarded to members of the British and otherCommonwealth armed forces. A member of theCitizen Military Forces from 1912, Wark enlisted in theAustralian Imperial Force on 5 August 1915 for service in theFirst World War. After initially being employed in the defence of theSuez Canal, his battalion was shipped to theWestern Front; it was here that Wark was twice decorated for his bravery and leadership. Having received theDistinguished Service Order in 1917 for his actions at theBattle of Polygon Wood, Wark was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1918 for his leadership and gallantry when in temporary command of his battalion over a three-day period, while conducting operations against theHindenburg Line.

Returning to Australia after the war, Wark resumed work as a quantity surveyor and established his own business. He became a respected member of Australian society, holding positions and directorships in several companies and charities until 1940, when he re-enlisted in the Citizen Military Forces for service in theSecond World War. Wark was promoted tolieutenant colonel and assumed command of the1st Battalion (City of Sydney's Own Regiment), but died suddenly atPuckapunyal Camp, Victoria, ofcoronary heart disease, aged 46. Lester Joseph Brain,AO,AFC (27 February 1903 – 30 June 1980) was a pioneer Australian aviator and airline executive. Born inNew South Wales, he trained with theRoyal Australian Air Force (RAAF) before joiningQueensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services (Qantas) as a pilot in 1924. He was awarded theAir Force Cross in 1929, after locating the lost aircraftKookaburra in northern Australia. Having risen to Chief Pilot at Qantas by 1930, he was appointed Flying Operations Manager in 1938. As a member of theRAAF reserve, Brain coordinated his airline's support for the Australian military duringWorld War II. He earned aKing's Commendation for his rescue efforts during anair raid on Broome, Western Australia, in 1942, and was promoted towing commander in 1944.

Seeing little prospect for advancement at Qantas once the war had ended, Brain left to join the fledgling government-owned domestic carrierTrans Australia Airlines (TAA) in June 1946. Appointed its first General Manager, he swiftly built up the organisation to the stage where it could commence scheduled operations later in the year. By the time he resigned in March 1955, TAA was firmly established as one half of the Commonwealth government'stwo-airline system. After his departure from TAA, Brain became Managing Director ofde Havilland Aircraft in Sydney, before joining the board ofEast-West Airlines as a consultant in January 1961. He was appointed anOfficer of the Order of Australia in January 1979 and died in June the following year, aged seventy-seven. (Full article...)

Mark Alan WebberAO (born 27 August 1976) is an Australian formerracing driver andbroadcaster, who competed inFormula One from2002 to2013. Webber won nineFormula One Grands Prix across 12 seasons. Inendurance racing, Webber won theFIA World Endurance Championship in2015 withPorsche.

Webber began karting at age 12 or 13 and achieved early success, winning regional championships before progressing to car racing in theAustralian Formula Ford Championship and theBritish Formula 3 Championship. He competed for two years oppositeBernd Schneider in theFIA GT Championship with theAMG Mercedes team, finishing runner-up in the1998 season with five wins in ten races before finishing second in the2001 International Formula 3000 Championship driving forSuper Nova Racing. Webber made his F1 debut with theMinardi team in the2002 season and finished fifth in his first race, theAustralian Grand Prix. He moved to theJaguar squad for the2003 and2004 championships. For the2005 season, he was granted an early release from his contract with Jaguar and joined theWilliams team, securing his first podium finish at theMonaco Grand Prix. Webber remained at Williams until2006, driving for theRed Bull team for the rest of his F1 career. Isopogon anemonifolius, commonly known asbroad-leaved drumsticks, is a shrub of the familyProteaceae that is native only to easternNew South Wales inAustralia. It occurs naturally inwoodland, open forest, andheathland onsandstone soils.I. anemonifolius usually ranges between one and two metres in height, and is generally smaller in exposed heathland. Its leaves are divided and narrow, though broader than those of the relatedIsopogon anethifolius, and have a purplish tinge during the cooler months. The yellow flowers appear during late spring or early summer and are displayed prominently. They are followed by round grey cones, which give the plant its common namedrumsticks. The small hairy seeds are found in the old flower parts.

A long-lived plant reaching an age of up to 60 years,I. anemonifolius resprouts from its woody base, known as alignotuber, afterbushfire. Seedlings appear in the year following a fire. AlthoughI. anemonifolius was collected byDaniel Solander in 1770, it was notdescribed until 1796 byRichard Salisbury. Several varieties have been named, though none are now recognised as distinct. It was first cultivated in the United Kingdom in 1791.I. anemonifolius grows readily in the garden if located in a sunny or part-shaded spot with sandy soil and good drainage. (Full article...)

Sir Vernon Haddon TreattKBE, MM, QC (15 May 1897 – 20 September 1984) was an Australian lawyer, soldier, Rhodes Scholar and politician. Born in Singleton, New South Wales and educated atShore School, Treatt interrupted his studies at theUniversity of Sydney to enlist at the outbreak of the First World War. Serving in theRoyal Australian Artillery, Treatt served in France and was awarded theMilitary Medal. Upon returning to Australia he was awarded aRhodes scholarship and further educated atNew College, Oxford.

After briefly practising law in 1923 in Britain, Treatt returned to Australia and was admitted to the New South Wales bar that same year, serving as aCrown Prosecutor at the supreme court. Treatt also was the Challis law lecturer at the University of Sydney. Treatt entered theNew South Wales Legislative Assembly on 26 March 1938, representing theElectoral district of Woollahra for theUnited Australia Party (UAP). When UAP PremierBertram Stevens was ousted from the leadership in August 1939 andAlexander Mair became Premier, Mair appointed Treatt, after serving only a few months in Parliament, as theMinister for Justice. Keith Ormond Edley JohnsonMBE (28 December 1894 – 19 October 1972), was an Australiancricket administrator. He was the manager of theAustralian Services cricket team in England, India and Australia immediately afterWorld War II, and of theAustralian team that toured England in 1948. The 1948 Australian cricket team earned thesobriquetThe Invincibles by being the first side to complete a tour of England without losing a single match.

Johnson joined theAustralian Board of Control for International Cricket in 1935 as a delegate forNew South Wales and served in theRoyal Australian Air Force duringWorld War II, performingpublic relations work inLondon. With theallied victory in Europe,first-class cricket resumed and Johnson was appointed to manage the Australian Services team, which played England in a series of celebratory matches known as theVictory Tests to usher in the post-war era. The series was highly successful, with unprecedented crowds raising large amounts for war charities. As a result, further matches were scheduled and Johnson's men touredBritish India and Australia before being demobilised. Telopea speciosissima, commonly known as theNew South Wales waratah or simplywaratah, is a large shrub in the plant familyProteaceae. It isendemic toNew South Wales inAustralia. Nosubspecies are recognised; the closely relatedTelopea aspera was classified as a separate species in 1995.T. speciosissima is a shrub to 3 or 4 m (9.8 or 13.1 ft) high and 2 m (6.6 ft) wide, with dark green leaves. Its several stems arise from a pronounced woody base known as alignotuber. The species is well renowned for its striking large red springtimeinflorescences (flowerheads), each including hundreds of individualflowers. These are visited by theeastern pygmy possum (Cercartetus nanus), birds such ashoneyeaters (Meliphagidae), and various insects.

Thefloral emblem for its home state ofNew South Wales,Telopea speciosissima has featured prominently in art, architecture, and advertising, particularly sinceAustralian federation. Commercially grown in several countries as a cut flower, it is also cultivated in home gardens, requiring good drainage yet adequate moisture, but is vulnerable to variousfungal diseases and pests. A number ofcultivars with various shades of red, pink and even white flowers are available.Horticulturists have also developedhybrids withT. oreades andT. mongaensis which are more tolerant of cold, shade, and heavier soils. Persoonia terminalis, also known as theTorrington geebung, is ashrub belonging to the familyProteaceae, and native to northernNew South Wales and southernQueensland in eastern Australia. Reported as asubspecies ofPersoonia nutans in 1981, it wasdescribed as a species byLawrie Johnson and his colleague Peter Weston in 1991.

Two subspecies‍—‌P. t. terminalis andP. t. recurva‍—‌are recognised; both are found on well-drainedacidic soils insclerophyll forests, andP. t. terminalis is also found on graniteoutcrops. Although similar in appearance, they differ in leaf length and curvature. Themurder of Leigh Leigh, bornLeigh Rennea Mears, occurred on 3 November 1989 while she was attending a 16-year-old boy's birthday party atStockton Beach,New South Wales, on the east coast ofAustralia. The 14-year-old girl fromFern Bay was assaulted by a group of boys after she returned distressed from a sexual encounter on the beach that a reviewing judge later called non-consensual. After being kicked and spat on by the group, Leigh left the party. Her naked body was found in the sand dunes nearby the following morning, with severe genital damage and a crushed skull.

Matthew Grant Webster, an 18-year-old who acted as abouncer at the event, pleaded guilty to her murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison with a 14-year non-parole period. He was released on parole in June 2004, after serving 14½ years. Guy Charles Wilson, the other bouncer and only other person aged over 18 at the party, pleaded guilty to assault; a third male (aged 15) pleaded guilty to havingsex with a minor. The investigation of Leigh's murder proved controversial, however, as several people who admitted to various crimes, including assaulting Leigh, were never charged; nor was anyone ever charged with her sexual assault. Webster's confession did not match theforensic evidence. The murder investigation was reviewed by theNew South Wales Crime Commission in 1996, and by thePolice Integrity Commission in 1998, with the latter recommending the dismissal of the detective in charge of the investigation. The Strand Arcade is a heritage-listedVictorian-style retailarcade located at 195–197Pitt Street in the heart of theSydney central business district, betweenPitt Street Mall andGeorge Street in theCity of Sydney local government area ofNew South Wales, Australia. It was designed by John B. Spencer, assisted by Charles E. Fairfax; and built from 1890 to 1892 by Bignell and Clark (1891), with renovations completed by Stephenson & Turner (1976). The only remaining arcade of its kind in Sydney, the property was added to theNew South Wales State Heritage Register on 13 December 2011.

Being three storeys high, the arcade has the traditional-styled protruding galleries, cedar staircases, tiled floors,cast iron balusters and timber framed shop fronts, under a prominent, tinted glass roof to reduce glare. The arcade contains the preliminaryboutiques that characterized the Sydney shopping experience of the 1890s. When the arcade opened in 1892, it was said to be the very latest inshopping centre designs and was described as, "The finest public thoroughfare in the Australian colonies". Pacific Highway is anational highway and major transport route of 790 kilometres (490 mi) along the east coast of Australia fromSydney toBrisbane. It is an integral part ofHighway 1 which circumnavigates the Australian continent. At its inception, the highway was asingle carriageway between Sydney and Brisbane. University House is a heritage-listed building inNewcastle inNew South Wales, Australia. Located on the corner of King Street and Auckland Street, it was designed by architectEmil Sodersten in association with local architectural practice Pitt and Merewether. An example ofArt Deco style, the design was inspired by the streamlined functionalism of contemporary architecture in Europe.

The building was constructed between 1937 and 1939 for the Newcastle Electricity Supply Council Administration and was originally known asN.E.S.C.A House. The interior, designed by Guy Allbut, originally comprised a demonstration theatre, showroom, offices and staff accommodation. In 1959, when Shortland County Council became responsible for electricity supply in theHunter Region, they constructed a three-storey extension at the back of the building. A tower was added in 1967 and remodelling was carried out in 1969 and 1970. After the council vacated the building in 1987, a radio station and an architectural practice moved in. The building only sustained cosmetic damage during the1989 Newcastle earthquake. In 1995, theUniversity of Newcastle established a library there. It was added to theNew South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. (Full article...)
