Introduction

Christianity is anAbrahamicmonotheistic religion, professing thatJesus wasraised from the dead and is theSon of God, whose coming as theMessiah (Christ) wasprophesied in theHebrew Bible (called theOld Testament in Christianity) and chronicled in theNew Testament. It is theworld's largest and most widespread religion with over 2.38 billion followers, comprising around 31.2% of theworld population. Its adherents, known asChristians, are estimated to make up a majority of the population in157 countries and territories.

Christianity remainsculturally diverse in itsWestern andEastern branches, and doctrinally diverse concerningjustification and the nature of salvation, ecclesiology, ordination, andChristology. Thecreeds of variousChristian denominations generally hold in common Jesus as the Son of God—theLogosincarnated—whoministered, suffered, anddied on a cross, but rose from the dead for thesalvation of humankind; and referred to asthe gospel, meaning the "good news". The fourcanonical gospels ofMatthew,Mark,Luke andJohn describe Jesus's life and teachings as preserved in the early Christian tradition, with the Old Testament as the gospels' respected background.

The three mainbranches of Christianity areRoman Catholicism (1.3 billion people),Protestantism (625 million-900 million), andEastern Orthodoxy (230 million) while other prominent branches includeOriental Orthodoxy (60 million),Restorationism (35 million), and theChurch of the East (600,000). Smaller church communities number in the thousands despite efforts toward unity (ecumenism). In theWest, Christianity remains the dominant religion even with adecline in adherence, with about 70% of that population identifying as Christian.Christianity is growing in Africa and Asia, the world's most populous continents. Christians arepersecuted in some regions of the world, particularly where they are in the minority in theMiddle East,North Africa,East Asia, andSouth Asia. (Full article...)

Nefarious: Merchant of Souls is a 2011 American documentary film about modernhuman trafficking, specificallysexual slavery. Presented from aChristian worldview,Nefarious covershuman trafficking in the United States, Western and Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia, alternating interviews with re-enactments. Victims of trafficking talk about having been the objects of physical abuse and attempted murder. Several former prostitutes talk about their conversion to Christianity, escape from sexual oppression, and subsequent education or marriage. The film ends with the assertion that only Jesus can completely heal people from the horrors of sexual slavery.

Nefarious was written, directed, produced and narrated byBenjamin Nolot, founder and president of Exodus Cry, the film's distributor. Nolot, who travelled to 19 countries to collect the film's content, said that the purpose of the film is "to draw people's attention to the issue, but also to inspire them in terms of what they can be doing … to take a stand against this injustice." The film was officially released on July 27, 2011, with individual grassroots screenings also taking place. Laila Mickelwait, Exodus Cry's director of awareness and prevention, screened the film in several countries in an attempt to persuade governments to make laws similar toSweden'sSex Purchase Act, which criminalizes the purchasing rather than the selling of sex. The film was released on home video on May 1, 2012. (Full article...)

Skyline of Bethlehem

Bethlehem is a city in theWest Bank ofPalestine, located about ten kilometres (six miles) south ofJerusalem. It is the capital of theBethlehem Governorate, and as of 2017 had a population of 28,591 people.[1] The city's economy is strongly linked totourism, with a focus on theChristmas period, whenChristians embark on a pilgrimage to theChurch of the Nativity, which is revered as the location of thebirth of Jesus.

A possible first mention of Bethlehem is in theAmarna correspondence ofancient Egypt, dated to 1350–1330 BCE, although that reading is uncertain. In theHebrew Bible, the period of theIsraelites is described; it identifies Bethlehem as the birthplace ofDavid. In theNew Testament, the city is identified as the birthplace ofJesus of Nazareth. Under theRoman Empire, the city of Bethlehem was destroyed byHadrian, but later rebuilt byConstantine the Great, who commissioned the Church of the Nativity in 327 CE. In 529, the Church of the Nativity was heavily damaged bySamaritans involved in theSamaritan revolts; following the victory of theByzantine Empire, it was rebuilt byJustinian I. (Full article...)

The Good Samaritan by Rembrandt (1630) shows the Good Samaritan making arrangements with the innkeeper
Behold, a certain lawyer stood up and testedhim, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?”
He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”
He said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.”
But he, desiring to justify himself, asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?”
Jesus answered, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way aLevite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certainSamaritan, as he traveled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out twodenarii, and gave them to the host, and said to him, ‘Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.’ Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?”
He said, “He who showed mercy on him.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
