Pieter Schlosser (born August 17, 1980) is aGuatemalan-American film and television composer best known forDestiny 2,[1]You, Me and the Apocalypse,The Lying Game, andTransformers: Dark of the Moon.[2] He has also composed scores for multiple studio films and network television shows.[3]
Schlosser was born inGuatemala City, Guatemala to aDutch mother andCosta Rican father ofGerman descent, who introduced him tojazz andclassical music at a young age. He citesopera,musicals andDisney films as his earliest influences. During his childhood, his family lived and traveled betweenGuatemala,Austria,Panama, andCosta Rica, enabling him to expand his musical vocabulary.[4][5] While living inAustria, he began singing inchoirs and learned to play thepiano. After moving toPanama, he began singing in a Swedish choir which sang inSpanish,English,French,German, andSwedish. He began learningsaxophone and, after moving toCosta Rica, playing insymphonic bands,youth orchestra, and smalljazz ensembles.[5]
During high school, he bought the music software Cakewalk Pro Audio and began composing his own music. While graduating from theGerman high school inCosta Rica, Schlosser wrote a song inspired byPat Metheny Group. TheLatin Grammy Award-winning world music groupEditus,[6] who was recording an album with songs byCosta Rican composers, included Schlosser's work in their albumCalle Del Viento.[7]
He attended theBerklee College of Music inBoston on a partial scholarship, where he completed a double major inFilm Scoring and Music Production and Engineering.[8] He then relocated toLos Angeles to pursue a career in film composition.[9]
Schlosser began his career inHans Zimmer's studioRemote Control Productions, through the connections he made while working atThe Record Plant inHollywood, in which he metAlan Myerson. He worked for five years alongsideSteve Jablonsky on multiple films and television series, includingThe Amityville Horror,The Island,The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning,Desperate Housewives,Friday the 13th, and theTransformers film series.[10] While working forSteve Jablonsky, Schlosser contributed additional music and conducted a small orchestra while recording the score for all nine seasons ofDesperate Housewives.[11]
In 2014, Schlosser was one of over a hundred people who were given theASCAP Award for Top Television Series for his work onFreeform'sThe Lying Game.[12]
In 2015, he composed the score forNBC'sYou, Me and the Apocalypse.[13] During that same year, he also worked with theCosta Rica National Symphony Orchestra and arranged a full orchestral performance of his original music in collaboration withEditus.[14] In 2017, he scored the filmWhat About Love starringSharon Stone andAndy Garcia.[15] In 2018, theIMAX filmIn Saturn's Rings for which he composed the opening music is set to be released.[16]
Schlosser has also composed scores for video games, includingDestiny 2,[17]Gears of War 2[18], andGears of War 3,[19]The Sims 3, andTransformers: The Game.
