ThePeugeot 408 (also marketed asPeugeot 408 X in China) is acrossover SUV produced by French automakerPeugeot. It was unveiled in June 2022 as aC-segment vehicle slotting between the308 and3008 or508.[6] It was publicly exhibited for the first time at the2022 Paris Motor Show.[7] It is based on theEMP2 platform closely shared with the third-generation 308, and despite sharing thesaloon silhouettes, mechanically unrelated to the Chinese market408 saloon (which itself was based on the previous-generation 308). According to Peugeot, the 408 is a blend betweenSUVs,hatchbacks andsaloons, and has been described as acoupe crossover.[8][9]
Development of the vehicle byPSA Group took seven years due to its radical concept, and was led by project manager Aurélie Bresson.[10][11] The vehicle was codenamed as the P54 during development.[11] The design was inspired from an internal concept car that Peugeot had worked on, which was known as the "2015 Advanced Design manifesto".[12] Its design concept was also featured by theCitroën C5 X, which shares the same platform (long-wheelbaseEMP2 V3[13]) and height with the 408. Due to its body shape, the 408 achieves a lowcoefficient of drag of 0.28, on par with traditional saloons.[12] The 408 also shared the same headlights, taillights, and dashboard design as the third-generation 308, which was developed alongside it.[8][12]
Three powertrain options similar to the 308 will be offered, which are two options of plug-in hybrid petrol with total output of 180 PS (178 hp; 132 kW) and 225 PS (222 hp; 165 kW), and a base 130 PS (128 hp; 96 kW) 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder PureTech petrol engine. All models are mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The petrol engine will be replaced with amild hybrid unit in late 2023 and abattery electric model called the e-408 will follow.[8]
The 408 is produced inMulhouse, France since 2022 andChengdu, China since January 2023.[14][15] In the Chinese market, the model is sold as the408 X to differentiate it with theolder saloon model.[16]
The dichroic paintwork of the 2017Peugeot Instinct [fr] concept inspired that of the 408.[17]
Peugeot's UK division launched a limited edition of 50 units namedFirst Edition, based on the GT trim.[18]
The 408 is only available with an automatic gearbox, with no manual options.[19]
Outside Europe, the 408 is also offered with a 215 hp (160 kW) THP petrol engine.[20][21]
Abattery electric version has been officially announced for 2023 or 2024.[22][23][24]
