Petha Manam Pithu, a remake of theMarathi filmManini (1961),[2] isS. P. Muthuraman's second film as director.[1][3] It is Telugu actressJayasudha's first Tamil film.[4]C. Guhanathan, who wrote Muthuraman's directorial debutKanimuthu Paappa (1972), was retained as screenwriter for this project too.[5]

Petha Manam Pithu was released on 14 January 1973.[7] Kanthan ofKalki lauded the performances of Muthuraman and Jaya, but criticised the story for not offering anything new.[8] The film was a success, and Muthuraman's first to run for over 100 days in theatres.[1]
