Latin | perimetrium, tunica serosa uteri |
Anatomical terminology |
Theperimetrium (orserous coat of uterus) is the outerserosal layer of theuterus, derived from theperitoneum overlying theuterine fundus, and can be considered avisceral peritoneum. It consists of a superficial layer ofmesothelium, and a thin layer ofloose connective tissue beneath it.
Anteriorly, the perimetrium covers the fundus and upper body of the uterus until it meets the superoposterior surface of the adjacenturinary bladder, resulting in a concave fold of peritoneum called thevesicouterine pouch. Posteriorly, the perimetrium covers the entire surface of the uterus deep down to thecervix, where it then folds back onto the adjacentrectum to form therectouterine pouch, the lowest gutter of theperitoneal cavity. Laterally, the perimetrium blends into theserosae of thebroad ligaments.[1][2]
