Clades

Pelecanimorphae is a clade ofaequornitheanbirds that comprises the ordersCiconiiformes,Suliformes andPelecaniformes.[3][4] In the past the name has been used as a homonym for Pelecaniformes.Pelecanimorphae is defined in thePhyloCode by George Sangster and colleagues in 2022 as "the least inclusive clade containingPelecanus onocrotalus,Sula leucogaster, andCiconia ciconia".[5] The less inclusive cladePelecanes was named by Sangsteret al, 2022 to unitePelecaniformes andSuliformes and defined in thePhyloCode as the "least inclusive crown clade containingPelecanus onocrotalus andSula leucogaster".[5]

This cladogram follows the hypothesis that herons are sister to Pelecani.[6][7]
