ThePan American Union Building is the headquarters for theOrganization of American States. It is located at 17th Street N.W. between C Street N.W. andConstitution Avenue,Northwest, Washington, D.C.[1]
The cornerstone was laid on May 11, 1908, byTheodore Roosevelt,Elihu Root, andAndrew Carnegie on the former site of theVan Ness Mansion.[2] The building was dedicated on April 26, 1910.[3]
It was designed in the style of aGreek temple, with large exterior stairways leading to palatial bronze gates. The building's roof is covered withLudowici tiles in a blend of reds.[4]
In 1919, the initial meeting of theInternational Labour Organization was held in the building.[5]
Between 1921 and 1922, the building was used for committee and subcommittee hearings throughout theWashington Naval Conference while closely guarded by marines with fixed bayonets.[6]
The building was added to theNational Register of Historic Places in 1969, and was designated aNational Historic Landmark in 2021, for its architecture and its role in international diplomacy.
