Owen Island in the Antarctic is a small (19 ha), circular, ice-freeisland lying betweenRound Point andPottinger Point about 500 m off the north coast ofKing George Island, in theSouth Shetland Islands.[1] It was charted and named in 1935 byDI personnel on theDiscovery II.
The island has been identified as anImportant Bird Area (IBA) byBirdLife International because it supports a largebreeding colony of about 21,000 pairs ofchinstrap penguins[1] in 1980, falling to 12,000 in 1987.[2]
