Oliver Lamar Poole (April 18, 1922 – June 27, 2009) was anAmerican football player who played at theend anddefensive end positions.
Ollie Poole was born in 1922 inGloster, Mississippi, and attended Crosby High School. He attended theUniversity of Mississippi and played college football there. DuringWorld War II, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was assigned to the V-12 Training Program at theUniversity of North Carolina. He played in 1943 for theNorth Carolina Tar Heels football team, winning All-Southern Conference honors. In 1944, he played for the Camp Lejeune Marines football team.[1]
He was selected by theNew York Giants in the 15th round (147th overall pick) of the1944 NFL draft but did not play for the Giants. He played professional football in theAll-America Football Conference (AAFC) for theNew York Yankees in1947 and theBaltimore Colts in1948 and in theNational Football League (NFL) for theDetroit Lions in1949. He appeared in a total of 14 AAFC and eight NFL games.[2]
After his playing career ended, Poole was a teacher and high school and junior college football coach in Mississippi and Louisiana. He died in 2008 inRuston, Louisiana, at age 87.[3]
