Olivier Azam (born 21 October 1974 inTarbes) is a retiredFrenchrugby union footballer. Ahooker who could also cover prop, Azam spent most of his professional playing career in theEnglish Premiership atGloucester Rugby. Azam also had 10 caps forFrance.
Azam made his Gloucester debut in August 2000 againstSaracens. During his first spell at Gloucester he started in the2002 Zurich Championship Final (the year before winning the play-offs constituted winning the English title) in which Gloucester defeatedBristol Rugby,[1] as well as the2003 Powergen Cup Final in which Gloucester defeatedNorthampton Saints.[2] Azam returned toGloucester Rugby in the summer of 2004 after one year with French outfitMontferrand. He notched over 140 appearances for the West Country club.
Renowned for his aggressive, hard hitting mentality, Azam had to compete withWallaby internationalJeremy Paul andEngland internationalAndy Titterrell for the No. 2 shirt upon his return.
Azam was named the player of the season by Gloucester fans for the 2008/09 season.[3]
On 19 May 2011 Gloucester Rugby announced that Azam was leaving Gloucester.[4] Shortly afterward, he chose to return to France to replaceAubin Hueber as forwards coach at Toulon.[5] He leftToulon in 2013 to become the new forwards coach for French sideLyon, replacingTom Smith.
On 15 December 2014, it was announced Azam would become the Director of Sport forOyonnax from a three-year contract.[6]
Outside of sport, he runs a successful restaurant inCheltenham called Armagnac.[7]
