North Carolina Highway 161 (NC 161) is a primarystate highway in theU.S. state ofNorth Carolina that connects the city ofKings Mountain, North Carolina toBessemer City, North Carolina andYork,South Carolina.

The first NC 161 was established in 1930 as a new primary routing fromWarrensville to theVirginia state line, inAshe County. In 1937 it was renumbered asNC 162 (and is currentlyNC 194).[2]
The second and current NC 161 was established in 1937 as a renumbering ofNC 215 to matchSC 161; it ran from the South Carolina state line toU.S. Route 29 (US 29) andUS 74 (nowUS 74 Business) in Kings Mountain. In 1939, the highway was extended northeast toNC 274 Bessemer City replacingUS 29A/US 74A.[2]
