Nicole Melichar-Martinez (néeMelichar ;Czech :Nicole Melicharová ,Czech pronunciation: [ˈmɛlɪxarovaː] ; born July 29, 1993) is an American professionaltennis player who specializes in doubles. On 3 July 2023, she peaked at No. 6 in the WTA doubles rankings.Melichar has won fifteen doubles titles on theWTA Tour and twoWTA Challenger doubles titles as well as seven doubles titles on theITF Circuit .She also has won one major title, winning the mixed-doubles competition at the2018 Wimbledon Championships with Austrian partnerAlexander Peya .[ 1] [ 2]
In singles, she has reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 400 in 2012 and has won two ITF titles.
Melichar is a two-time Grand Slam tournament finalist in women's doubles, finishing runner-up at the2018 Wimbledon Championships withKvěta Peschke [ 3] and the2020 US Open withXu Yifan .[ 4]
Melichar made herFed Cup debut for the U.S. team in 2019, partneringDanielle Collins , losing their match against Australian pair ofAshleigh Barty andPriscilla Hon .[ 5]
She also reached four WTA 1000 finals, at theCincinnati Open in 2020 with Xu Yifan, and in 2022 and 2023 withEllen Perez , and at the2022 Canadian Open also with Perez.[ 6]
Melichar-Martinez qualified for the third time at theWTA Finals in 2023, partnering Ellen Perez and reached the semifinals for the second time, having made it to that level also in 2021 with a different partner, Dutch playerDemi Schuurs . Next the pair Melichar/Perez reached the final, a first time at this level for both players.[ 7] They lost toLaura Siegemund andVera Zvonareva in the championship match.[ 8]
At the2024 Dubai Championships , she reached her fifth WTA 1000 final with Perez, before losing to fourth seedsStorm Hunter andKateřina Siniaková .[ 9] As top seeds, they won the2024 Bad Homburg Open , defeatingChan Hao-ching andVeronika Kudermetova in the final.[ 10]
Melichar-Martinez and Perez qualified for the2024 WTA Finals and reached the semifinals after compiling a record of two wins and one loss in the group stages.[ 11] They lost in the last four to second seedsGabriela Dabrowski andErin Routliffe , in straight sets.[ 12]
Personal life and background [ edit ] Melichar was born in the Czech Republic, and has lived in the U.S. since shortly after her birth.[ 13] Her older sister Jane played tennis, and Melichar claims to have taken up the sport when she was just one year old.[ 13]
She is married to her tennis coach, Carlos Martinez.

Melichar has played three seasons withWorld TeamTennis , making her debut as a junior in 2010 with theSt. Louis Aces . She has since played for theWashington Kastles in 2018 and 2019. It was announced, she will be joining theSan Diego Aviators during the 2020 WTT season set to begin July 12.[ 14]
She partnered withCoCo Vandeweghe in women's doubles for the San Diego Aviators during the 2020 WTT season. Both players were traded to the New York Empires more than halfway through the season. The Empires would ultimately win the 2020 WTT Championship in a Supertiebreaker over theChicago Smash .
