TheNews Journal is an Americannewspaper andmultimedia site (wnewsj.com) published in print two days per week (Wednesday and Saturday) inWilmington, Ohio, coveringClinton County.[2] It is owned by AIM Media, based inMcAllen, Texas.[3]

The newspaper traces its history back to twoweeklies, theClinton Republican (begun in 1838 as theWestern Whig, the name changed the next year),[1] andThe Wilmington Journal (founded 1868), that merged intoThe Journal-Republican in 1912.[4] TheWilmington News Journal was founded by W. J. Galvin on Oct. 15, 1915, originally called theWilmington Daily News.

In 1916, it merged with the semi-weeklyJournal Republican and became known as theWilmington Daily News Journal. It was owned by the Galvin family until it was sold to theBrown Publishing Company in 1986.[5] In 2010, Brown declaredbankruptcy and was reconstituted asOhio Community Media, which later became part of Civitas/Versa.[6] The company, including theNews Journal, was purchased for an undisclosed sum in 2011 by Versa Capital Management.[7]

In 2012, Versa merged Ohio Community Media, formerFreedom papers it had acquired,Impressions Media, andHeartland Publications into a new company,Civitas Media.[8] Civitas Media sold its Ohio papers to AIM Media in 2017.[9]

Shortly after a website redesign in early 2023, the News Journal announced on February 21, 2023 that the printed edition, previously published Tuesday through Saturday, would publish only on Wednesday and Saturday.[2]
