TheNatal spurfowl orNatal francolin (Pternistis natalensis) is a species ofbird in the familyPhasianidae.It is found inBotswana,Eswatini,Mozambique,South Africa,Zambia, andZimbabwe.
The Natal spurfowl was described in 1833 by the Scottish zoologistAndrew Smith and given thebinomial nameFrancolinus natalensis. He noted that the species inhabited brushwood thickets in the vicinity ofNatal, in the east of South Africa.[2] The species is now placed in thegenusPternistis that was introduced by the German naturalistJohann Georg Wagler in 1832.[3][4] A phylogenetic study published in 2019 found that the Natal spurfowl issister toHildebrandt's spurfowl.[5] The Natal spurfowl is considered asmonotypic: the proposedsubspeciesneavei is not recognised.[4]
