NHK Radio 1 (NHKラジオ第1放送,NHK Rajio Dai-ichi Hōsō), known by its callsignNHK AM, is Japan's oldest radio station operated by thepublicbroadcaster,NHK. Its programming output, which consists of news, current affairs, and information is broadly similar to theBBC'sRadio 4 in theUnited Kingdom,National Public Radio in theUnited States,CBC Radio One inCanada andDeutschlandfunk inGermany.[1] NHK Radio 1 is available mainly on AM. Thecallsign is JOAK inTokyo. It began broadcasting on July 12, 1925. DuringWorld War II, it often broadcast official announcements.[2]
