Mutzig (French pronunciation:[mytsik][3] or[mutsik];[4]German:Mützig) is acommune in theBas-Rhindepartment inGrand Est, in north-easternFrance.[5] The commune of Mutzig is located at the entrance of theBruche river valley, on theRoute des Vins d'Alsace.
Evidences of human activities can be traced back to thePaleolithic era with the recent discovery ofNeanderthal artifacts. The town Mutzig was first mentioned in the 10th century. It became part of thePrince-Bishopric of Strasbourg in 1308.[6]
In the 19th century, several industries were established in Mutzig among which a weapon manufactory on the grounds of the former castle of theCardinal de Rohan. In 1893, whenAlsace was part of theGerman Empire,Kaiser Wilhelm II ordered the construction of a fort, theFeste Kaiser Wilhelm II, north of the town, as well as military barracks to defendStrasbourg against a potential French invasion.
