Miqdadiyah (Arabic:المقدادية;Kurdish:شارەبان,Şareban (Shareban, Sharaban)[2][3]) is a city in theDiyala Governorate ofIraq. Its population is a mix ofArab,Kurdish andTurkmen.[4] The city is located about 80 km (50 mi) northeast ofBaghdad and 30 km (19 mi) northeast ofBaquba.
Theetymology of the name Miqdad or Muqdadia stands forPersian "Given by the Magi", in the same way as the name Baghdad stands "Given by God".[5]
