Mount Stewart is on theGreat Western Divide, a sub-range of theSierra Nevada inCalifornia. It is located inSequoia National Park,[1] 2.1 miles (3.4 km) southeast ofTriple Divide Peak and 2.7 miles (4.3 km) northwest ofBlack Kaweah. TheHigh Sierra Trail traversesKaweah Gap south of the summit, andLilliput Glacier is on the mountain's northern flank.
The mountain is named for George W. Stewart, editor ofVisalia Delta. Stewart was the leader of a campaign to protect the "Big Trees".[5]Francis P. Farquhar, author and former president of theSierra Club, credits Stewart as "the father" of Sequoia National Park.[6]
According to theKöppen climate classification system, Mount Stewart is located in analpine climate zone.[7] Mostweather fronts originate in thePacific Ocean, and travel east toward the Sierra Nevada mountains. As fronts approach, they are forced upward by the peaks (orographic lift), causing them to drop their moisture in the form of rain orsnowfall onto the range.
