Monterey station was atrain station inMonterey, California located close toFisherman's Wharf. Originally served by theMonterey and Salinas Valley Railroad, the line was purchased bySouthern Pacific on September 29, 1879. TheMonterey and Pacific Grove Railway opened astreetcar extension to the station in 1892,[1] providing local connections until about 1923. Southern Pacific constructed a newstation building in 1921.[2] Train service ended with the cancellation of theDel Monte after April 30, 1971, whenAmtrak took over passenger rail services in the United States.
The depot was converted to retail space, and is occupied by abrewpub as of 2019[update].[3]
Restoration of service along theMonterey Branch Line was studied in the 1984–89Caltrans passenger rail development plan.[4] Later suggestions call for establishment oflight rail service along the Monterey Branch Line, but the Monterey stop is planned to be located at theCustom House Plaza.[5]
