Mo (divination)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manjusri, the bodhisattva said to influence the dice during divination.

Mo (Tibetan:མོ་,Wylie:mo), is a form ofdivination that is part of the culture and religion ofTibet. The Tibetan people consultMo when making important decisions about health, work or travel.[1] Mo employsdice and there are books written by variouslamas on interpretations for the casting of dice. The answers given by the Mo are regarded as coming fromManjushri, theBodhisattva of wisdom.[2] Mo is considered to represent a blend of Tibetanshaman traditions and Buddhist beliefs.[3]

One Mo prediction manual was composed byJamgon Ju Mipham Gyatso,[2] a great scholar and saint of theNyingmapa tradition ofTibetan Buddhism. This Mo prediction manual is based primarily upon theKalachakra Tantra and supplementary explanations from the 'Ocean ofDakinis'.[2] To use this Mo divination, one must have a question in mind and roll the dice. The dice's outcome will indicate an answer in the prediction manual. The answer in the manual should answer your question, but may need some interpretation.[2]

TheDalai Lama consults the Mo divination when making important decisions.[4]
