Deodato Taumaturgo Borges Filho, better known by hispen nameMike Deodato (/ˌdəˈdæt/DEE-ə-DAT-oh; born May 23, 1963), is a Braziliancomic book artist.

Early life

Mike Deodato was born on May 23, 1963, inCampina Grande,Paraíba,Brazil. He is the son of comic artistDeodato Borges.[1]

Career

One of Deodato's first works was a 1993 photo-realistic comic book adaptation of the television seriesBeauty and the Beast published byInnovation Publishing. Deodato became famous in the North American comic book industry for his work with writerWilliam Messner-Loebs onWonder Woman, during which he co-created the characterArtemis of Bana-Mighdall.[2] After his Wonder Woman project, he became the penciller ofThor, where he worked firstly with writerWarren Ellis and then again with writer William Messner-Loebs. Later he drewGlory forRob Liefeld's Extreme Studios atImage Comics andMaximum Press.[3]

While his style in the mid-1990s was highly reminiscent ofJim Lee, he has recently changed to a more simplified, photo-realistic and sometimes moody style. His first work with this new artistic identity wasThe Incredible Hulk, written byBruce Jones. Since then, he has worked on theDoctor Strange spin-offWitches[4] and became the regular penciller ofThe Amazing Spider-Man andThe New Avengers. Deodato then took over as regular penciller for the Marvel titleThunderbolts with issue 110, once again collaborating with Warren Ellis. Deodato then became the regular artist for theDark Avengersongoing series which came out of the conclusion ofSecret Invasion. With writerEd Brubaker, he launched the ongoing seriesSecret Avengers in May 2010,[5] before returning toNew Avengers.

In 2012 he became the penciller ofThe Avengers andThe New Avengers.[6] Deodato worked withJason Aaron on the eight-issue flagship comic of Marvel's 2014 crossover storyline,Original Sin.[7] In 2017 Deodato drew theAstonishing X-Men ongoing series with writerCharles Soule.[8] He drew theInfinity Wars limited series in 2018 with writerGerry Duggan.[9]

In March 2019 Deodato announced that he would leave Marvel after his upcoming run onSavage Avengers.[10] Following the expiration of his Marvel contract, he worked with DC to create a Batman-centricComic-Con Experience 2019 poster. The poster, colored by Marcelo Maiolo, will honor Batman's 80th anniversary.[11]

In March 2020 Deodato and writerJ. Michael Straczynski started the series The Resistance. The series were one of four inaugural releases comprising a new shared universe within the publisher's Upshot imprint.[12]
