Merville is an unincorporated community in theComox Valley between the City ofCourtenay,Mount Washington, Dove Creek, and Black Creek near the east coast ofVancouver Island. It was named by CanadianWorld War I soldiers returning to the Island after fighting in France; they named it afterMerville-Franceville-Plage, where the Canadians had their first field headquarters.[1]: 172
