Thebroad-toothed mouse orbroad-toothed rat (Mastacomys fuscus) is a species ofrodent in the familyMuridae.
It is found only in South-eastern Australia. InVictoria live specimens have been caught in theSnowfields,Great Dividing Range (toCooma in New South Wales),[2]Gippsland Highlands,Otway Ranges andWilsons Promontory. Specimens located inscats have been found in theOtway plains andEast Gippsland.[3] The species is also recorded inbuttongrasssedgeland up to 1000 metres in westernTasmania.[4]
Habitat preferences are areas ofherbfields,grasslands andforests with minimal shrubs but a dense covering of sedge, grass, herbs and moss, where precipitation does not fall below 1400 mm per year inalpine areas and others 1000 mm at loweraltitudes (DCNR 1995 pp. 208–210).
