Mary Cynthia (Cindy) Farach-Carson is an Americanbiochemist, known for her work inextracellular matrix,perlecan,tissue engineering andbone metastasis. She is a professor of diagnostic and biomedical sciences and director of clinical and translational research at the school of dentistry atUniversity of Texas Health Science Center at Houston,[1] and an adjunct professor of biosciences and of bioengineering atRice University.[2]

Education

Farach-Carson received her BS inbiology at theUniversity of South Carolina in 1978 and her PhD inbiochemistry from theMedical College of Virginia atVirginia Commonwealth University in 1982. She served as a postdoctoral fellow at theJohns Hopkins School of Medicine andMD Anderson Cancer Center.[1]

Research contributions

Farach-Carson serves on the editorial boards ofBiomolecules[3] andMatrix Biology.[4] She serves as senior scientist and on the steering committee of the Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, atRice University.[5]

She served as co-editor of the seven-volume reference bookTopics in Bone Biology.[6]

Awards and honors

In 2010, Farach-Carson was electedAAAS Fellow.[7] In 2018, she was electedAIMBE Fellow.[8] In 2016, she received the Presidential Mentoring Award atRice University.[9] In 2021, she was given the Stephen M. Krane Award[10] by theAmerican Society for Bone and Mineral Research.
