Mark Philip John BonneyDL (born 2 March 1957)[1] is anAnglicanpriest. Since 2012, he has served as thedean of Ely.

Early life

He was born in 1957.[2] He was educated at a school in at Northgate Grammar School in Ipswich[3] Having been awarded a scholarship as a choral exhibitioner,[4] he studied music atSt Catharine's College, Cambridge.[5] He graduated from theUniversity of Cambridge with aBachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1978; his BA was promoted to aMaster of Arts (MA Cantab) degree in 1982.[2] He gained aBlue in both Tennis and Golf while studying for this degree.[3]

Having completed his music degree, he taught the subject for three years.[4] He left teaching to train for the priesthood and enteredSt Stephen's House, Oxford. Having studied theology, he graduated from theUniversity of Oxford with a BA degree in 1984; this degree was promoted to anMA Oxon in 1989. He then undertook a further year of ministerial training at St Stephen's House.[2]

Ordained ministry

Bonney wasordained in theChurch of England as adeacon in 1985 and as apriest in 1986.[2] From 1985 to 1988, he served hiscuracy atSt Peter's Church, Stockton-on-Tees.[6] He then joinedSt Alban's Abbey, where he was thechaplain from 1988 to 1990 and served asprecentor from 1990 to 1992.[2] He wasvicar of theChurch of St Mary, Eaton Bray (theparish ofEaton Bray withEdlesborough) from 1992 to 1996.[5] Next, from 1996 to 2004, he was therector of theChurch of St Peter, Great Berkhamsted (parish ofGreat Berkhamsted).[2] In addition, from 2002 to 2004, he served asRural Dean of Berkhamsted.[3]

In 2004, he left theDiocese of St Albans after 16 years of service, to join the staff ofSalisbury Cathedral.[4] Between 2004 and 2012, he was acanon residentiary andtreasurer of the cathedral.[5] In April 2012, it was announced that he would be the nextdean of Ely. On 22 September, he was installed asdean at a service inEly Cathedral.[3]

Personal life

Bonney is married to Kate, a primary school teacher. Together they have two children, daughters Hannah and Eleanor.[5] In 2023, he was appointed adeputy lieutenant ofCambridgeshire.[7]
