MajorMark BerettaOAM (born 16 June 1966) is an Australian journalist, best known as a sports reporter onSeven Network programSunrise, he has also been an officer in theAustralian Army Reserve in public relations since 2019.

In July 2008, Beretta began presentingSeven Early News sport alongsideNatalie Barr at 5.30 am, which leads intoSunrise, where he is still the sports presenter.[1] Beretta joined withTom Williams to host Rexona Australia'sGreatest Athlete, in 2010. In 2011, he again hosted the show, this time alongside dual internationalWendell Sailor.[2]

Beretta formerly co-hostedSunrise with currentNine News presenterGeorgie Gardner from 2000 to 2002. From mid-2002 to 2004, he moved to presenting the sport onSeven News Sydney.[3] In mid-2004, he was replaced bySports Tonight presenterMatthew White; he subsequently moved toSunrise where he was appointed sports presenter.

Beretta hosted the coverage of the1998 Nagano,2000 Sydney and2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games, as well as the2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.[3]

In 2006, Beretta was the host of Seven Network'squiz show,The Master,[4] which ran for only one episode on a Wednesday night at 8:30 pm before beingburnt off in a Monday night timeslot during the 2006–07 non-ratings season.

From 2007 until 2014, Beretta was part of the Seven Network'sV8 Supercar commentary team, working alongsideMatthew White,Neil Crompton,Mark Skaife andMark Larkham. Beretta returned to commentary in 2021 when Seven resumed coverage of the championship from previous broadcasterNetwork 10.[5]

Beretta is also a fill in presenter onThe Morning Show andWeekend Sunrise, and a fill-in sport presenter onSeven News in Sydney. In 2013, Beretta hosted Seven's coverage of theAustralian Open.

Publication

In October 2010, Beretta released his bookThe Riders - Australia's Motorcycle Champions through publisherHarperCollins.[6]The Riders offers an insider's view of the world of motorcycle racing, with a collection of stories on 24 of Australia's greatest motorbike champions.

In October 2022, Beretta released the book 'Mark Beretta's Greatest Moments in Australian Sport' with Neil Cardigan, through publisher Affirm Press.[7]

Personal life

Beretta has two children.[8]

Since 2010, Mark has regularly taken part in the 1,400 km (870 mi)Tour de Cure bike ride fromSydney toMooloolaba over ten days, to raise money to help find a cure for cancer.[9][10] In 2011, he was appointed to the board of Tour De Cure.[11]

In 2019, Beretta joined the Australian Army Reserves.[12]

In October 2023, Beretta separated from partner Rachel.[13]

Recognition and awards

Beretta was awarded the Medal of theOrder of Australia in the2021 Queen's Birthday Honours, for "service to the community through charitable organisations".[14]
