Marci Shore (born 1972) is an American professor of intellectual history atYale University, where she specializes in the history of literary and political engagement withMarxism andphenomenology.

Shore is the author ofCaviar and Ashes: A Warsaw Generation's Life and Death in Marxism, 1918–1968, a milieu biography of Polish and Polish-Jewish writers drawn to Marxism in the twentieth century; and of The Taste of Ashes, a study of the presence of the communist andNazi past in today'sEastern Europe. She translatedMichał Głowiński'sHolocaust memoir,The Black Seasons. Shore marriedTimothy D. Snyder, professor of history at Yale, in 2005. Shore is Jewish.[1][2][3]

Early life and education

Shore was born inAllentown, Pennsylvania, in 1972. In 1991, she graduated in 1991 fromWilliam Allen High School in Allentown, and then attendedStanford University, where she received herB.A. in 1994.[4] Two years later, in 1996, she received herM.A. from theUniversity of Toronto.[5] She received adoctorate from Stanford University in 2001.[5]

Career

Shore works chiefly inFrench,German,Polish,Russian,Czech,Slovak,Ukrainian, andYiddish sources. She was also apostdoctoral fellow at theHarriman Institute, an assistant professor of history andJewish studies atIndiana University, and the Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Visiting Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies atYale University.[5] She has twice been a fellow of theInstitut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (Institute of Human Sciences) inVienna. Shore teachesEuropeancultural andintellectual history at Yale.[5] Shortly after the2024 United States presidential election, Shore andTimothy Snyder decided to leave their positions at Yale.[6] They andJason Stanley, another Yale faculty member, joined theMunk School of theUniversity of Toronto.[7][8]
