Themarbled flounder,Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae, is aflatfish of the familyPleuronectidae. It is ademersal fish that lives onsaltwater sand and mud bottoms. Its natural habitat is thetemperate coastal waters of the northwesternPacific, from southernHokkaido,Japan, to theYellow Sea,Gulf of Bohai,East China Sea andKorean Peninsula. It can grow up to 45 centimetres (18 in) in length, and its maximum recorded weight is 1.9 kilograms (4.2 lb).[2]
The diet of the marbled flounder consists primarily ofbenthic organisms such asamphipods,polychaetes,shrimps,crabs and other benthoscrustaceans.[2]
InJapan, the marbled flounder is found inBeppu Bay, and considered a specialty in the town ofHiji, where it is calledshiroshita karei ("under-the-castle flounder"), because it is caught under the waters ofHiji Castle. The town holds an annual flounder festival. It is eaten raw insashimi, in soups, or deep fried.
