Malviya Nagar is a residential locality inSouth Delhi. Situated betweenSaket andHauz Khas, its namesake is the freedom fighterMadan Mohan Malviya.[1]

Malviya Nagar was initially populated in the 1950s byrefugees fromPakistan, after thePartition of India.[2] A large portion of the population were ethnicRajasthani,U.P.,Haryanvi,Punjabis andSindhis, as well asAfghan refugees who were displaced during theSoviet–Afghan War in 1971.[3]

Today, Malviya Nagar is bounded by Panchsheel Enclave in the north, Sheikh Sarai in the east,Saket in the south and Hauz Khas in the west. Sub localities that are part of Malviya Nagar includeGeetanjali Enclave, Navjeevan Vihar, Bhavishya Nidhi Enclave, Shivalik colony, Begumpur,Sarvodaya Enclave and MMTC Colony.

It is serviced by theMalviya Nagar station located on the Yellow Line of theDelhi Metro.[4] Malviya Nagar is also home toDelhi Police's Training School.[5]

Malviya Nagar has two major commercial shopping areas and markets and a specialityhospital. Two of India's biggest and posh malls —Select Citywalk and DLF Avenue (Known as DLF Place earlier) — are located in the neighbourhood. There are several neighbourhood parks that are popular jogging and running areas. A number of monuments from the era of theDelhi Sultanate are located in Malviya Nagar. This includes the tomb of Sufi saint Sheikh Yusuf Qattal who lived during the reign ofIbrahim Lodhi and died in 1526-27.[6]

Malviya Nagar main market houses several nationalised and public sector banks andATMs includingAxis Bank,Syndicate Bank,Punjab National Bank,State Bank of India,ICICI Bank,HDFC Bank,Canara Bank,Vijaya Bank,Kotak Mahindra Bank,Central Bank of India,Citibank,South Indian Bank,Andhra Bank,IDBI Bank,Indian Bank,Karnataka Bank. Some of the foreign banks areStandard Chartered Bank andDeutsche Bank.

Transportation

Malviya Nagar is bordered by two majorNew Delhi thoroughfares;Sri Aurobindo Marg, which is a primary route connectingConnaught Place andCentral Delhi toGurgaon, and theOuter Ring Road. Malviya Nagar is connected by other parts of New Delhi byDelhi Bus Rapid Transit System bus lines. The bus fare ranges from 5.00 to 15.00. The buses connecting Malviya Nagar are:

Autorickshaws andtaxis are also available for public transportation. There is an auto-rickshaw stand is at the Main Market and the roundabout near Shivalik Gate (which is also the Bus Depot).Saket is a nearby neighbourhood.

TheDelhi Metro Yellow Line to Gurgaon is functional and has a station atMalviya Nagar.[7]

Politics

In the SDMC, Malviya Nagar (ward 63S) is represented by BJP's Nandani Sharma.[8]

Malviya Nagar is a constituency of theDelhi Assembly. Since 2013, the sitting Member of the Assembly has beenSomnath Bharti of theAam Aadmi Party.[9]

Malviya Nagar is part of theNew Delhi (Lok Sabha constituency) currently represented by Member of ParliamentMeenakshi Lekhi of BJP.[10]

Malviya Nagar is also the former residence ofKashmiri separatist leaderSyed Ali Shah Geelani, where he lives for 3 months each year during winter inJammu and Kashmir.[11]
