Malladi Chandrasekhara Sastry (22 August 1925 – 14 January 2022)[1] was an Indian scholar and television personality who specialized in theVedas andPuranas texts in theTelugu andSanskrit languages. His works have included commentaries onAll India Radio duringBhadrachalam's Sitarama Kalyanam andBrahmotsavam festivals. ForUgadi day, he recited thePanchanga Sravanam (almanac reading). On television he hosted a showDharma Sandehalu andDharma Sukshmalu[clarification needed] where he answered questions regarding the Purana and various aspects ofHinduism. The show is telecast on theSri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel and formerly on theDoordarshan Saptagiri Channel. He was the principal of a college run by the trust namedTirumala Tirupati Devasthanams where they dopravachan (lectures) on the Puranas.[clarification needed] He received theRaja-Lakshmi Award in 2005, and has also been conferred the title ofPurana Vachaspati.

Early life

Sastry was born on 22 August 1925[1] to Adilakshmamma and Dakshinamurthy inKrosuru, in theGuntur district ofAndhra Pradesh. He was a native ofAmaravathi village, Guntur district.[2][3] His grandfather, Sriman Malladi Ramakrishna Chainulu, was not only an authority in Vedic andSanskrit literature, but also a propagator of theAdvaita VedantaSiddhanta (doctrine) over Andhra Pradesh. Sastry studied in thefields ofVedas,vyakaranam (grammar),tarkam (logic),poorva meemamsa (extension of the Vedas), andvedanta sastram (Indian spiritualism).[2] He also studied thePuranas inHinduism.

When he was 19, he deliveredPravachan (lectures) about theRamayana. His speaking ability allowed him to give a discourse at an event presided over by scholarViswanatha Satyanarayana atVijayawada. Sastry cited theRamayana, theMahabharata, theBhagavata Purana, and the oratorios ofDattatreya among his favorite works for discourses.

Sastry established himself as an authority in theVedas and theAstadasha Puranas texts. He provided commentaries onAll India Radio duringBhadrachalam's Sitarama Kalyanam andBrahmotsavam festivals. On television, he hosted a showDharma Sandehalu andDharma Sukshmalu[clarification needed] where he answered questions regarding the Purana and various aspects ofHinduism. The show is telecast on theSri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel and formerly on theDoordarshan Saptagiri Channel.[year needed]

Personal life and death

Sastry was married and had six sons and two daughters. Sastry died at his residence in Hyderabad, on 14 January 2022 at 5:15pm, at the age of 96[1][4]
