Makiri is a location in the northwest ofSouth Australia, where arock hole and an Aboriginaloutstation are located. It is in theGreat Victoria Desert, betweenKaltjiti andWatarru. It is an importantsacred site for thetjala (honey ant)Dreaming, a women's law of the localAboriginal people. Much of the site wasdesecrated by asurveying team in 1969.[1] It was officially declared a Prohibited Area by theSouth Australian government in 1973, as an "importantAboriginal mythological and cultural site".[2]
Makiri is located in a region ofshrubland andsand dunes. The outstation here was established in the early 1980s. Since 1984, it has been governed and supported by the Irintata Homelands group from Kaltjiti. There is one house withsolar power. Water is supplied from arainwatertank and abore. It is often used as aresearch base by scientists, as the area supports severalendangered species.[3]
