Majid Ali Jaunpuri (also known asMuhaddith Manwi; died 1935) was an IndianSunni Islamic scholar and a rationalist thinker. He was mainly known for his work in the subjects of logic andhadith. He was an alumnus of theDarul Uloom Deoband and is reported to have written amarginalia toSunan Abu Dawud andJami` at-Tirmidhi.
Jaunpuri was born in Mani Kalan, a village inJaunpur.[1][2] He studied with Abdul Haq Khairabadi, Lutfullah Aligarhi and Abdul Haq Kabuli.[3][4] He graduated from theDarul Uloom Deoband in 1896 (1314 AH). He attendedHadith lectures ofRashid Ahmad Gangohi for two years. He acquired the knowledge of rational sciences from Abdul Haq Khairabadi and Ahmad Hasan Kanpuri.[5]
Jaunpuri taught in the Madrasa al-Arabiyyah inGulaothi, and then in the Madrasa al-Arabiyyah in Mendhu,Aligarh. Later, he taught in the Madrasa al-Azīzyah inBihar and then returned to teach in Mendhu. He went toKolkata, where he was appointed as the Head teacher ofAliah University, then "Madrasa Alia".[2][6] He taught logic, reason and philosophy.[1][7] He also taught in Delhi's religious schools. His students includeAbdul Ghani Phulpuri,[a]Syed Fakhruddin Ahmad,Shukrullah Mubarakpuri andMuslim Jaunpuri.[b][5][10]
According toAsir Adrawi, Jaunpuri has written marginalia to theSunan Abu Dawud andJami` at-Tirmidhi.[11] Habib ar-Rahman Qasmi mentions that, "Although, Muhaddith Manwi was an imam oflogic andphilosophy, but he was very much inspired byMaulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi in the span of 4 years. Then he served, along with the other disciplines of knowledge, mainly the discipline of Hadith. In the six books of Hadith, he was mainly attached withBukhari andTirmidhi and used to lecture on both wholeheartedly."[4] Jaunpuri died in 1935.[11]
