Madhu Muttom is an Indian screenwriter fromKerala.
Madhu got his start withFazil'sKakkothikkavile Appooppan Thaadikal (1986).
His best known film as a screenwriter isManichitrathazhu (1993) directed by Fazil, for which he also wrote some of the songs.[1] It was remade inKannada asApthamitra (2004) and inTamil asChandramukhi (2005) both directed byP. Vasu, inBengali asRajmohol (2005) directed bySwapan Saha and finally inHindi asBhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) directed byPriyadarshan. Madhu has been credited as the sole writer for these remakes after he filed acopyright suit against Fazil when the latter started being listed as the writer of the original script in the remakes.[2][3] The story is inspired by a tragedy that happened in anEzhavatharavad, theAlummoottil meda (an old traditional mansion) located at Muttom (nearHaripad), belonging to a centralTravancoreChannar family, in the 19th century.[4] The inheritor of the Alummoottil property and hisdomestic worker girl were murdered by the son-in-law after he had been written-off due to themarumakkathayam system of inheritance prevalent inKerala at the time. The murder gave rise to many local legends which serve as the basis for the film.[2] Madhu himself belongs to this Alummoottil tharavad.[5] "Vijanaveedhi", aMalayalamhorror novel by Aswathi Thirunal, has been listed by some as an inspiration for the film, though director Fazil and Madhu both deny this.[6]
Bharathan Effect (2007), for which he wrote the screenplay, is the second venture by the directorAnil Das who debuted withSargavasantham in 1995.[2]
Madhu is unmarried and currently lives alone in his native village of Muttom inHaripad.[7][2]
