Thelumbar splanchnic nerves aresplanchnic nerves that arise from thelumbar ganglia (thelumbar part of thesympathetic trunk)[1] and travel to an adjacentplexus near theaorta. They originate from L1 and L2.[citation needed] Together with fibres from theaortic plexus, they form thesuperior hypogastric plexus.[1]
These nerves containpreganglionic sympathetic andgeneral visceral afferent fibers.[citation needed]
The site ofsynapse is found in theinferior mesenteric ganglion and the postsynaptic fibers innervate thesmooth muscle andglands of the pelvic viscera andhindgut.[citation needed]
